Periodontal (Gum) Treatment
Periodontal (Gum) Treatment located in Murray Hill, New York, NY
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by bacteria that can result in the destruction of tooth-supporting structures: gum tissue, the ligament surrounding your teeth and the bone that supports them. The body’s response to the bacterial challenge leads to clinical signs such as deep pockets, gum bleeding, recession and tooth mobility, which can ultimately cause tooth loss.
PERIODONTAL (GUM) TREATMENT Q & A
How is periodontal disease treated?
The first phase of periodontal treatment is deep scaling and root planning, which will eliminate plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and surrounding structures.
Local or systemic antibiotic therapy and prescription mouthwash may be used as adjunctive therapy.
After periodontal treatment, patients often benefit from more frequent visits, possibly every 3-4 months. These appointments include reviewing oral hygiene, professional plaque and calculus removal, and re-assessing the periodontal health to determine if active therapy is needed in the event of recurrent periodontal disease.
Why do I need surgery to treat periodontal disease?
If deep pockets are still present after initial therapy, your provider will review surgical options with you. In cases where bone loss is moderate to severe, pocket reduction surgery may be needed to eliminate bacteria and reshape the underlying bone. Bone augmentation procedures (bone grafts) can be an option to help replace bone that has been lost around natural teeth, ask your provider if you are a candidate for bone grafting.
